This atypically strong system, identified with temperatures plummeting to minus 33 degrees Celsius at 5,500 meters, is moving eastward near the Izu Islands, where Hachijo Island recorded wind gusts of 88 kilometers per hour early Wednesday.
The cold air from the system has resulted in substantial snowfall in the Kanto-Koshin and Chugoku regions. Notable accumulations in the six hours before 8 a.m. on Wednesday include 26 cm in Kusatsu, 18 cm in Karuizawa, 12 cm in Fujikawaguchiko, and 10 cm in both Nagano city and Nasu Kogen.
