Shashi Tharoor’s recognition of PM Modi’s diplomacy regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict has pleased the BJP while Congress remains silent. Tharoor admitted to misjudging India’s position, highlighting Modi’s adeptness at managing relations with both nations. Despite internal criticism, the Congress has chosen not to respond, indicating a focus on upcoming state elections.

Senior Congress figure Shashi Tharoor’s acknowledgment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts during the Russia-Ukraine crisis has generated positive reactions from the BJP. Meanwhile, the Congress party is notably silent following backlash over Tharoor’s earlier praise of the Kerala LDF government. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad remarked, “Better late than never… other leaders of Congress should do the same.”

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra emphasized that Tharoor’s background in diplomacy positions him well to recognize Modi’s achievements. He stated, “Shashi Tharoor understands diplomacy” and urged Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, to emulate Tharoor’s acknowledgment instead of opposing Modi and the nation.

Kerala BJP chief K Surendran commended Tharoor’s honesty in expressing his prior opposition to Modi, labeling his change of heart as commendable. He noted, “You see India’s global rise under PM Narendra Modi is truly a refreshing take.” The Congress party, reprimanded for Tharoor’s previous statements, decided to refrain from commenting on his latest remarks, focusing on upcoming state elections in Kerala.

Shashi Tharoor, a former Union minister, expressed that he had misjudged India’s stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. At the Raisina Dialogue, he stated, “I am still wiping the egg off my face because I was one who criticized India’s position back in February 2022.” He acknowledged India’s capability to mediate effectively between both nations, marking a significant diplomatic achievement.

When questioned about his remarks, Tharoor reaffirmed his position without further elaboration. The geopolitical situation started on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, prompting India to adopt a careful diplomatic approach despite international pressure to condemn Russia.

Tharoor’s admission acknowledges a shift in his perspective about India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sparking a positive response from the BJP while the Congress remains quiet amid internal challenges. His comments highlight India’s growing global influence under Modi’s leadership, suggesting a nuanced diplomatic strategy. Tharoor’s ability to recognize and commend Modi’s achievements serves as an essential reminder of the importance of bipartisanship in national interest.
