Tharoor Reflects on India’s Russia-Ukraine Stance and Potential Role in Peacekeeping

Shashi Tharoor, a Congress leader, acknowledged feeling embarrassed for opposing India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war when it initially commenced. He believes India’s adopted policy has positioned the country to enhance prospects for lasting peace in the region. During the Raisina Dialogue, Tharoor mentioned that he previously criticized India’s position, articulating concerns over violations of international laws and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
He stated, “I am still wiping the egg of my face because I… criticized the Indian position… back in February 2022.” Tharoor underscored that India’s policy has allowed the Prime Minister to engage with both Ukraine and Russia diplomatically within short intervals, suggesting that this unique position could facilitate peace.
Tharoor noted that India benefits from geographical advantages and is in a unique situation to contribute to peace efforts. Although he cannot officially represent the government due to his opposition status, he indicated that India could consider sending peacekeepers if a resolution between Russia and Ukraine is reached.
He emphasized that Russia has been clear about not accepting European NATO peacekeepers, necessitating alternative peacekeeping forces, possibly from non-European nations. Tharoor expressed optimism, stating that the current political climate in India may not see resistance to peacekeeping proposals, unlike the past.
Highlighting India’s history, he pointed out the country’s extensive involvement in over 49 peacekeeping missions, reinforcing India’s commitment to promoting global stability while expressing cautious hope for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
