His death has sparked community protests demanding justice and accountability, while police have opened an FIR against six suspects. Another shooting incident occurred the same night, raising concerns about law enforcement in the region.
In Moga, Punjab, Shiv Sena leader Mangat Rai, also known as Manga, was murdered by three assailants on motorcycles late Thursday night. CCTV footage captured the dramatic moments leading up to his death, showing him attempting to evade his attackers by climbing a locked gate. Rai was shot shortly after leaving his house on a scooter to purchase milk, demonstrating a terrifying scene of violence.
The attack began around 10 PM when the first shot was fired, striking an 11-year-old boy instead of Rai. Despite dodging several bullets, Rai ultimately succumbed to the attackers who pursued him. The security footage reveals Rai’s desperate attempt to escape, but the assailants caught up with him and shot him dead.
Following the incident, the shooters posted a video claiming responsibility, alleging that Rai threatened and extorted them. Authorities have since opened a First Information Report (FIR) against six individuals identified by Rai’s family. Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Gandhi stated that this was a case of personal rivalry and promised swift action.
The victim’s family and supporters blocked the Ferozepur National Highway in protest, demanding justice and the arrest of the culprits. They announced their intention to continue the protests until their demands were met, including government jobs and financial assistance for Rai’s family, delaying the victim’s last rites.
On the same night, another violent incident occurred when three men entered a salon in Bagiana Basti and shot the owner, Devender Kumar. An attack claimed by the same shooters was said to involve personal conflicts. Kumar was hospitalized, sustaining injuries to his leg while police investigate further.
This string of violent events raises concerns over safety and law enforcement in the region, prompting outcries from community members and families affected by such crimes.
The murder of Mangat Rai underscores the rising violence in Punjab, particularly linked to personal rivalries. The community’s response highlights their demand for justice and effective law enforcement. With protests continuing until justice is served, the authorities may face increased pressure to address safety concerns in the region and bring the assailants to justice. Further investigations into related incidents may reveal broader implications of gang-related activities in the area.
