A British tourist was allegedly raped by a man she met on Instagram in Delhi. After arriving in the city, she was assaulted at a hotel where a staff member also reportedly molested her. Both assailants have been arrested under serious charges, and the victim received medical support after seeking help at a hospital.

A 36-year-old British tourist reported being raped by an acquaintance she met on Instagram while staying at a hotel in Delhi’s Mahipalpur area. The incident reportedly occurred on March 11, after she travelled from Goa to Delhi to meet her Instagram friend, Kailash Gautam, who had picked her up from the airport. Following their arrival at the hotel, police claim that Gautam assaulted her after consuming alcohol.

The woman indicated in her complaint that she had resisted Gautam’s advances, but under duress, drank wine to cope with her anxiety. Following this, Gautam allegedly sexually assaulted her multiple times. When she attempted to leave, hotel staff mistakenly believed she was simply inebriated, allowing Gautam to accompany her back to her room.

During the ordeal, a hotel housekeeping staff member named Mohammed Gulfam is accused of inappropriately touching the woman while they were in a lift. She shouted at him, causing him to withdraw. After Gautam left the hotel later that night, the woman experienced severe pain and sought medical care at a nearby hospital, where the doctor notified law enforcement.

Delhi Police acted quickly, apprehending both suspects within two hours of the woman’s report. Officials investigated the case, noting that Gautam had limited English proficiency and communicated with the victim using an online translator. Both men have been charged with rape and molestation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and they were remanded to judicial custody by a Delhi court. Medical and psychological support was provided to the victim, while the high commission was informed about the situation.

This incident highlights serious issues surrounding safety for tourists and the alleged misuse of social media connections. Prompt action by the Delhi Police led to the swift arrest of both suspects, ensuring that the victim received necessary support. The case underscores the importance of addressing sexual violence and enhancing the safety protocols in hospitality sectors, especially for vulnerable individuals.
