A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening in Wepener city, Free State Province, South Africa, where Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi youth, was shot dead. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, Kamrul moved to South Africa 12 years ago to establish a better life through entrepreneurship after initial employment.
The attack transpired around 9:00 PM when two assailants targeted Kamrul as he was closing his shop. His younger brother, Kamruzzaman, reported that the robbers aimed to steal cash and valuables, holding Kamrul at gunpoint. Their attempt escalated when they dragged him towards his car, suspecting he had more valuables inside.
During a confrontation, one of the robbers fatally shot Kamrul in the chest. His family revealed that he had recently built a house and intended to return to Bangladesh soon to marry. This loss has deeply affected his family, particularly their mother, who has been suffering from distress since the news of his death.
The family is seeking assistance from the Bangladeshi embassy for the repatriation of Kamrul’s body. Furthermore, SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer, has offered support to the family in this matter if needed.
