Tokyo Livestream Murder: Man Arrested Over Debt Dispute with Victim

In a shocking incident, a 42-year-old man, Kenichi Takano, has been arrested for fatally stabbing 22-year-old Airi Sato while she was live streaming in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward. Takano reportedly committed the act due to a dispute over an unpaid debt Sato owed him, having contacted police previously about the issue in January 2024.

Takano’s financial relationship with Sato dates back to 2022 when he transferred over ¥2 million (approximately $13,520) to her to cover living expenses and phone bills. He claimed to have borrowed the money from consumer finance companies to assist her with her financial needs, but he became frustrated when Sato failed to repay him. He allegedly stated to investigators, “She continued to not repay me, so I decided to attack.”

Sato, who supported herself through streaming on the app WhoWatch, came to know Takano in December 2021. Their acquaintance escalated as he began visiting her workplace around the summer of 2022. The attack took place around 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday, during her live stream. Authorities believe Takano stabbed her multiple times in crucial areas, resulting in her death shortly after being taken to the hospital.

Takano mentioned to police that he was in the vicinity when he discovered Sato’s livestream announcement, and he made his way to Tokyo that morning to find her. It is suspected that he ambushed Sato as she walked alone, leading to the tragic outcome.
