Under pressure from Trump for a quick resolution, Zelenskiy aims to present a united front despite lacking U.S. security guarantees, which are deemed essential by Kyiv.

Zelenskiy stated he will not participate directly in the U.S. meetings, delegating responsibilities to his chief of staff, along with his ministers of foreign affairs and defense. In seeking a resolution, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, indicated the aim is to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire. Zelenskiy has suggested a ceasefire covering air and maritime operations and proposed a prisoner swap to test Russia’s seriousness about peace. However, Moscow has dismissed such a temporary truce, accusing Kyiv of trying to stall.

Zelenskiy has also expressed Ukraine’s readiness to form a joint fund with the U.S. from their mineral sales, which Washington claims is vital for sustained American support. According to reports, Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea. Recently, there has been a notable escalation in Russian military activity, including drone and missile strikes targeting cities far removed from the conflict’s frontline. Zelenskiy reported that last week alone, Russia launched 1,200 guided bombs, nearly 870 drones, and over 80 missiles against Ukraine.
