Severe weather in KwaZulu-Natal claimed 22 lives and caused 3.1 billion rand in damages, leading to a National State of Disaster declaration. Authorities will coordinate relief efforts and have urged residents to stay vigilant due to upcoming rainfall.

Severe weather in February resulted in 22 fatalities and considerable destruction in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, an executive council member, acknowledged this during a statement, where he noted that the inclement weather events occurred from February 16 to 28, prompting the government to declare a National State of Disaster.

The damages from this extreme weather are estimated to be around 3.1 billion rand (approximately 170 million U.S. dollars). The severe conditions not only caused loss of life but also inflicted extensive damage on public infrastructure and private properties, disrupting vital services like water and electricity supply.

Buthelezi reassured the residents of KwaZulu-Natal, stating that the department would collaborate closely with the National Disaster Management Center (NDMC), municipalities, and other stakeholders for effective response and recovery. The commitment is towards supporting affected communities and rebuilding resilient infrastructure.

By declaring a National State of Disaster, the authorities aim to mobilize resources across the country to implement support measures, contingency protocols, and a multi-sectoral relief plan to reduce the disaster’s adverse effects. Buthelezi also urged residents to stay alert and heed warnings from the South African Weather Service due to anticipated further rainfall.

Severe weather in KwaZulu-Natal led to 22 deaths and significant infrastructural damage. The National State of Disaster declaration allows for coordinated relief efforts and mobilization of resources. With additional rainfall predicted, residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow weather service guidelines to ensure safety.
