In the summer of 2023, after examinations in Japan, she faced the reality of a likely cancer diagnosis. Despite the fear, she completed her final NFL season, reassured by her doctor that the cancer was likely Stage 1 and slow-moving. She ended her NFL career by winning the best cheerleader award among her peers.
After surgery in February 2024 and enduring 3½ months of chemotherapy, Honda faced severe side effects. Nevertheless, the encouragement from fans and teammates motivated her. “Cheerleaders always keep smiling, no matter how tough things get,” she noted, emphasizing the mental resilience gained through years of cheerleading.
Honda bravely shaved her head, embracing her situation with colorful wigs. She completed her radiation therapy in October and set her sights on future ambitions. Initially aiming to cheer again, she successfully auditioned for the Sharks in January and is training for an upcoming season opener.
