On the night of March 4, Afghan police seized a significant cache of illicit drugs in Takhar province, arresting two suspected smugglers. According to provincial police spokesperson Mohammad Akbar Haqqani, authorities uncovered a total of 6,299 kg of illicit opium hidden within a gas tanker in the Khatayan area of Taluqan, the provincial capital. The tanker was reportedly transporting the drugs from the nearby Badakhshan province.
In a simultaneous operation in Kandahar province, counter-narcotics police confiscated additional illicit drugs weighing 15 kg of heroin, 689 kg of hashish, and materials used in the manufacturing of narcotics. Twelve individuals were arrested on charges of drug-related offenses. These operations, which occurred over the past two days, also included the destruction of eight acres of poppy farms, per provincial police spokesman Mullah Assadullah Jamshid.
The Afghan interim government, having prohibited poppy cultivation along with drug production and trafficking, has committed to eradicating the drug trade in Afghanistan. This mission is part of a broader strategy to transition the nation from its historical reliance on poppy farming to achieving a drug-free status.
