Class 10 Student in Kerala Dies Following Nunchuck Assault at Farewell Party
Muhammed Shahabas, a 15-year-old student from Kozhikode, Kerala, died after sustaining severe head injuries from a nunchuck attack by fellow students. The altercation occurred during a farewell party near a tuition center, leading to a murder case against five students. A 15-year-old student from Kozhikode district in Kerala, identified as Muhammed Shahabas, succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during a violent confrontation with classmates involving a nunchuck, a martial arts weapon. The unfortunate incident unfolded near a private tuition center in Thamarassery on February 23. Shahabas was being treated at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital when he ultimately passed away from his injuries.
According to KE Baiju, the Superintendent of Police for Kozhikode Rural, a murder case has been filed against five students from the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in Thamarassery. The police believe that the altercation stemmed from an argument connected to a farewell party at the tuition center that escalated into violence at around 5 PM on the day of the incident.
Following the confrontation, Shahabas sought refuge at a nearby mall, where he chose not to return home immediately. Instead, he accepted a ride on a motorcycle with an acquaintance. During the ride, he experienced vomiting but did not pursue medical help. He opted to stay overnight at a friend’s residence before heading back home, where his health quickly deteriorated.
Initially assessed at Thamarassery Taluk Hospital, the seriousness of Shahabas’s injuries went unnoticed by doctors. However, as his condition declined, he was transferred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he remained in a coma until his death. In light of these events, authorities have detained five students pending a hearing before the Juvenile Justice Board.
The General Education Minister, V Sivankutty, has called for a departmental inquiry into the matter. The tragic incident reflects serious concerns surrounding youth violence and safety in educational settings, and actions are being taken to address the situation, as highlighted by police and educational authorities involved.
