Wärtsilä to Supply Engines for 120 MW Power Plant in Kazakhstan

Wärtsilä will supply equipment for a 120 MW power plant in Kazakhstan, including six gas-powered engines. In partnership with KCOI, the project will complement wind and solar energy sources, enhancing energy reliability. The project aims for delivery by the end of 2025 and full operation by mid-2026, supporting Kazakhstan’s shift towards renewable energy.

Wärtsilä will provide the engineered equipment for a 120 MW power plant currently being constructed in Kazakhstan. This order, placed by Kazakhstan Caspian Offshore Industries (KCOI), was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024. The shipment will include six Wärtsilä 46TS-SG gas-powered engines along with necessary auxiliary equipment.

KCOI is leading the development of a hybrid power project in the Mangystau region, which encompasses a 77 MW wind power plant and a 50 MW solar plant, along with the new engine facility. This project aims to supply electrical power to local oil and gas operations. The Wärtsilä engines are designed for quick starts, stabilizing power supply to manage fluctuations from renewable sources efficiently.

Mirko Borghesi, CEO of KCOI, highlighted the significance of this hybrid project, stating, “This will be the first hybrid project of its type to be implemented in Kazakhstan. The engine power plant is essential to enable a stable and reliable supply of electricity, and the Wärtsilä engines will efficiently regulate the frequency and voltage to ensure this reliability is achieved.”

The expected delivery for the Wärtsilä equipment is at the end of 2025, with full project operation anticipated by mid-2026. Kenneth Engblom, Vice President at Wärtsilä Energy, remarked, “This is a major hybrid power project that also supports Kazakhstan to move towards decarbonised energy production and Wärtsilä is proud to be a participating partner.”
